Agnes, that's an excellent point. I don't want to give anybody the false impression that being indexed is equivalent to hitting page one in the SERPs, but the topic had come up a few times last week and I figured that it was a sign that I should blog about it.

Yes indexing is very easy but getting good ranking takes time and it will come true by doing the off-page optimization effectively.

I can't resist a quick reply - As with most things, this sort of thing could be easily fixed by just not being an idiot in the first place. In other words, chances are, if you do something stupid, chances are people will find out whether you post it on twitter, facebook, your blog, your website, your favorite local hangout or bar, or on the wall of a restroom stall. Instead of just being careful what you admit to, try being careful what you actually do. You'll tend to sleep much better at night! As a matter of fact, with the state of the economy, I would encourage useless people to advertise as much as possible so they can be weeded out and decent people who need the work can be selected for what few jobs there are.

Absolutely, they're dealing with it the right way. I understand your position, but when the site is free and driven by users, they kind of have an obligation to not have that "Tough; deal with it" mentality. For the site to succeed, people have to enjoy using it. All companies should be listening to their users in order to continue to grow.

After this blog post, a small discussion came around about apps being online, and Chris P had a very good point... If you are a user of paid software (say, office 2003) and you don't like the 2007 version that comes out, you can choose not to upgrade. If it's an online app, everyone is forced to make the upgrade at once. If google docs were to change tomorrow, you wouldn't have a choice about the new interface. This forced upgrade path is something that's going to become an issue for all online apps, and I think any company that does this type of work is going to have to work with their customers in order to find a happy medium. Smaller changes, and slowly introduced is probably the best path to take on this. Add one new feature at a time, listen to feedback, and tweak it to what the majority wants.

Great point Pam! I think that is part of the problem concerning the whole switch. Unless they want to devote a huge amount of time and energy into maintaining an engaging social presence, their strategy could ultimately fail.

At the same time, they are putting the future of the brand in the hands of the people, which is something that few brands understand. People already have control over the brand, whether Skittles likes it or not. However, I'm not so sure that their current "let's fly by the seat of our pants" strategy could be the best approach. We'll just have to see what happens :-)
