The Forces That Be…

New social networks are born everyday, so how do you keep one alive and thriving? You need to strategize with the five forces. So, what are the five forces you ask? Drum roll… me-driven, peer-driven, trust-driven, time-driven and cause-driven.

Me-driven keeps the user in mind. Social networks are an extension of one’s self, with the user controlling what info is seen and by who. When getting involved with these social networks, know who’s the cool cat, take notice of those who influence the network. Peers connect to each other just like in the real world. You are much more likely to get your message across if you have an authoritative voice, that’s been seen often, rather than some newb popping in for the first time. With that being said, don’t be discouraged, you have to start somewhere and this is were the trust part comes in. It’s a must to earn the trust of others in the network, become a friend and give valuable insight. Don’t even begin to think you are going to increase sales just by throwing out sales pitches.

Moving on to time-driven,”I know what I want and I want it now!” Keep that in mind because now you are competing for the attention and are on the user’s time. Waiting three weeks to respond to a fellow’s comment or question is just as good as a car without wheels.

To wrap this up, remember your cause. If you are selling hunting rifles don’t befriend Peta on Facebook. Connect with others that share similar interests and show passion. As Karen Webster said, “these communities can sniff out a commercial pitch faster than you can say bad PR.”

Good luck, keep your network booming and start building some solid relationships!
